We have been performing within the Madison community for the past year and a half and will soon expand our audience by recording our music. Since its inception, the group has performed for many private and public events in the Madison area such as the National Urban League’s annual cabaret, the 46th Annual Legal Education Opportunities Banquet, and the Passing the Mic Festival.
The Bellhops premiered their original 35-minute production, Honey In My Tea, in the 2014 Line Breaks Festival at the Overture Center for the Arts. Honey in My Tea in conversation with Audre Lorde’s Sister Outsider, Billie Holiday’s “Strange Fruit,” and Nina Simone’s “Four Women.” The themes within the preceding pieces are juxtaposed in this performance, and though they are from different time periods, what all of these texts show together is that things have not changed; people have just stopped watching.
Reviews and Press Releases
"Lord of the Fly bounced around the stage, almost falling off at several points. His energetic set was assisted by the help of several of The BellHops' vocalists. These additions only heightened the audience’s excitement, and the mixture of performance styles was the perfect segue from the bluesy BellHops." -The Daily Cardinal
"The Bellhops started out the night with a smoother sound. Taylor Scott, Hiwot Adilow and Eric Newble Jr. carried the sultry and bluesy vocals. Keyboards, bass guitar, violin, trombone and drums backed them up and filled the room with palpable electricity that bolstered their vocal range and lyrical themes of womanhood and male relations." -Badger Herald
